How to Prepare for Your AppointmentHow to Prepare for Your Appointment

Having a Successful Appointment with Your Pediatric Gastroenterologist

Our goal is to make your child feel better.  We need your help to make this happen.

Pick an appointment time when your child is likely to be fully awake.

Arrive on time or ahead of time for your appointment.

  • Double check your appointment time, location of the appointment, and directions so you arrive on time.

Bring all medications with you to the appointment.

  • It is very important that we know exactly which medications (prescriptions, over-the-counter, and supplements) your child is taking.

For young children (infant, toddler, or younger preschooler) it may be helpful to have another parent, older child, or caregiver nearby to help.

Bring soft toys, books, a bottle, or sippy cup to help soothe and engage your child throughout the visit.

You and your child will be asked many questions.  Discuss important information with your child before the appointment so we can help your child get better.

  • What are your symptoms (pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, reflux, vomiting)?
  • What triggers the symptoms?
  • When did the symptoms start?
  • What makes the symptoms worse?
  • What makes the symptoms better?
  • Where do you feel the symptoms?
  • What is the intensity of pain?
  • How often and for how long do you feel the symptoms?
  • Does the pain move or change location?
  • Do you have a family history of digestive diseases or related health problems?
  • Do you have a history of gastrointestinal surgery?

Avoid multitasking, texting, or looking at your phone during the appointment.

Be prepared to take notes.  Keep a pen and paper handy.  You will be receiving lots of information during the visit.

Bring a list of any questions you and your child have.

We look forward to helping your child feel better!
