My Food Is Stuck - Eosinophilic Esophagitis

Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) Eosinophilic Esophagitis (EoE) is an inflammatory disorder characterized by the deposition of eosinophils in the wall of the esophagus (food pipe). A young man sat in my office complaining that he felt that his "food is stuck."  This was not the first time he felt this way.  Usually after "gulping" down plenty of water, the feeling would pass; however, this time was different.  He had a history of asthma and eczema that were under good control.  His physical exam was normal.  Blood work obtained by the primary care physician was unremarkable.  He had been placed on acid lowering medication for possible gastroesophageal reflux but had not noticed any improvement in his symptoms. I informed the family that the story sounded very suspicious for eosinophilic esophagitis.  The mother exclaimed: "Eo what???" Our young man underwent an EGD which was consistent with EoE. Treatment was initiated and he is doing well.
