Heartburn refers to pain in the chest that occurs when stomach acid spreads back up into the food pipe or esophagus.  This is known as acid reflux.  Up to 10% of American teenagers complain of heartburn due to acid reflux.  Other teenagers complain of:
  • a sore throat
  • hoarse voice
  • sour taste in the mouth
  • frequent burping of acid into the mouth
  • trouble swallowing
  • a feeling that food is stuck in the throat
  • waking up because of a choking feeling
  • frequent coughing or throat clearing
  • bad breath
